My job has a lot to do with stories. Finding and recognizing good ones, filtering out the bad. It also involves a lot of interviewing. And now, sitting here in the 6th straight hour of interviews with at least three more to go, I realized something.
I have this screenplay I've been meaning to write for a long time. An incredible story based in historical non-fiction. I've been putting it off for a long time because the task of writing history - real events - is daunting. I feel like I need to do more research. But as I listen to these three people each tell the "same" story, it occurs to me how different individuals remember different things, how some parts of the story are completely different, and some are just plain omitted.
I now realize how to write this screenplay, because I can change a few things, or at least infer from the research I have done. Chances are, what I have taken for fact may only be someone's story... and who knows how true that is?

if your screenplay is "based in historical non-fiction," wouldn't that make it historical fiction?! if so, then I'm excited. if not, then I'm only mildly interested.
