Hollywood makes me paranoid. Or at least this job does. Just last week I found out a guy who I had become friends with here was fired... which freaked me out because I didn't really feel like I was doing a ton more than him! But I guess I'm still new and eager to please... Still, I find myself constantly freaked out that they're going to fire me for some stupid reason. However, my nerves were put at ease when my boss came up to me last week and asked what I was doing over the weekend. He and his wife (my other boss) were going to Cabo from Friday to Monday and wanted to know if I'd be willing to come with to help watch over their ADORABLE two year old. I figured it would have been stupid on about twelve different levels to say no to this, (I mean, I'd be missing work on Friday and Monday so I was essentially getting paid to go to Mexico) so naturally, I packed my hot pink suitcase, tucked my passport into my pocket, and met them at the Santa Monica apartment Friday morning.
I immediately hit it off with the tot, who is seriously Gerber-baby material. He loves "a-panes" and is super smart - he quickly memorized the parts of the airplane I taught him (tail, nose, wings, engine, etc.) After a two and a half hour flight, we landed in Cabo to stifling heat. The whole weekend was sweaty, sticky, and humid, so thank gosh I spent most of it by the Hilton pool. No, we didn't stay at the Hilton. While the guys went fishing, myself, the wife, her friend, and the baby snuck in every day (to multiple hotels) by saying we were "meeting friends for lunch." I think the Hilton staff, our usual stomping grounds, was hip to our game, but didn't really care since we spent money on food by the pool. Funnily enough, on our last day the wife's friend was hit on while in the infinity pool by the VP of marketing who asked her how she was enjoying her stay...
As I mentioned, the baby was absolutely a pleasure. I mean, he had his fits, especially when he woke up that first night at 10:30 PM in a strange house (we were staying for free in this guy's vacation house which was nice and big but also kind of sketchy...) with a strange girl (me) and no mommy around (they were out to dinner). But for the most part, he was just such a doll. A big boy about to be two, burly but not fat, beautiful blonde hair and an angelic smile. He finally learned my name when he connected it with Ariel, as we would watch the Little Mermaid in the minivan on the way to the beach/pool. Even his "pooping" face/stance is cheek-pinchingly cute. We played helicopter, read Thomas the train, watched the creepiest kid's shows ever (Doodlebops and Lazy Town, check them out on Youtube), made "sand castles" (piles of sand which he destroyed) and swam in the pool. I was rarely on my own with him, and when I was he was usually asleep, so when mom and friend went to work out, I was left to read and tan by the pool with instructions to order whatever I wanted while he slept. I think I spent all of $15.00 the whole time.
Besides enjoying the sun, beach, and pool, we also took a glass bottom boat trip during which we saw fish, sea lions, pelicans, and the famous Cabo arch/Pacific window, and walked through downtown Cabo. Apparently there's a place where you can hang upside down to do a tequila shot... We went out to a fancy dinner at The One and Only Palmilla (that's actually the name of the resort) where we were told we could not take any pictures (we later discovered Jennifer Aniston was there). It's a super ritzy hotel complex where the celebs go. You are greeted with homemade tropical popsicles, golf-carted down past the children's pool (with kid-sized lounge chairs), to the private beach and pool area where we were handed two small flags: put up the blue one if you want service (drinks etc.) and the yellow if you do not want to be disturbed. At night, everything is lit by giant pots of fire. Awesome.
Oh, and the bugs... I mean it was like Jurassic Park 4, or 5, or whatever number they are up to! I thought a bird was attacking me until I realized it was a GIANT MOTH. The first night, we killed what we think was a baby tarantula, chased away a jumping spider of some sort, saw a ton of lizards (including one on the ceiling over my bed), and some other weird bugs I have no idea even how to describe (let's say a giant ant with antlers?) So yeah, if you know how much I hate bugs, you know how hard it was for me to play cool! It was like an entomologist's dream.
Other than the heat and the bugs, it was lovely! Although I have to say I don't really feel the need to go back... it's like a dirtier, less developed Puerto Rico. But apparently the fishing is great - my boss caught something like 25 marlins, a bunch of dorado, and even hooked a whale (which won the tug of war). They all returned with major sunglasses tans. All of this meant nothing to me, except yummy fish barbecue. Now I'm back in LA, back at the office, back to snake bites and shark attacks. And so glad I didn't have any bites of my own this weekend!
